Engineering: 4th - 8th Grade

In this course, students in Fall Semester will learn about various types of bridges and how their design makes them suitable for different kinds of loads and stresses. In each class, students will test the strength of their bridge by adding weight to it. By the last class, students will be able to design their own bridge based on what they learned. Each session will focus on a different topic and uses K’NEX®.

During the Spring Semester, students will be exploring broad concepts in the areas of force and motion, simple machines, and energy. While they will be learning vocabulary common to all of these areas of science, the main objective is for students to explore the engineering and design processes. Each class will involve building a K’NEX® model according to the instructions, then testing it and thinking about ways to change or improve the model.

Plus, our technology platform is seriously cool… kids have thousands of backgrounds, props, characters and music to choose from to help bring their imaginations to life. Kids build a strong foundation of programming skills by building a different type of video game each day—complete with game logic and physics.

** The coding classes taught by Sylvan are virtual friendly. If there is a pause next year during the school year, we can easily switch the class over to a virtual platform. The student would log in to the meeting room so that Ms. Karen could give instruction in the meeting room and you can access your projects from your own laptop or computer.
